NOT FAR FROM THE TREE is a contemporary/mainstream novel about a female editor who moves from New England to Melk Ciity, a fictitious metropolis located in Southeastern U.S.A. The main character, Loraine Swane, relocates, with three children in the 1980's, after the sudden death of her husband, Berchard.
Absorptive characters who befriend the Swanes include an Italian-born attorney who is Loraine's neighbor; a long-time, feisty friend, desperate to become a mother; an alcoholic artist who is transformed; and an abused, little girl who finds a loving home.
Affirmative changes are sought and achieved through love of family and friends of different ethnic, economic and philosophical backgrounds. Imbroglios are webbed throughout on various issues, some of which are romance; race; parenting; child welfare; and addiction.
Revelations as to how this family copes are especially explored and challenged. Not Far From the Tree has been written with a goal to be a tasteful collage that purposely attempts to convey positive views through introductions, elaborations, and experiences of the active characters. Flashes of sadness and dismay, with moments of gaiety and laughter that outweigh the flashes, are incorporated with little profanity or lewd scenarios.
Although "Tree" is centered around an American-Black family's experiences, many of the issues and situations are, generally, universal. This novel denotes wholesome substories -- some doused in drama and others reaching toward romance. There is a surprise ending!
